The objective of the Business Immigration Program is to encourage investment and employment in Canada through the migration of people who have the ability to successfully establish or invest in a business in Canada. The Business Immigration Program currently falls under three categories of immigrants:

  • Investors
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Self-Employed

INVESTORS

An Investor is defined as a person who has successfully operated or controlled or directed a business or commercial undertaking for at least two years and who has accumulated, through his/her own endeavors, at least $800,000 in Canadian funds.

Prior to visa issuance, immigrant Investors must pay $400,000 CAD to the Receiver General for Canada. Funds are used for job creation and economic development. The full amount of investment (without interest) is repaid to the investor after 5 years. The return of the investment is fully guaranteed by participating provinces and territories. Investors are not required to start any business in Canada nor are any conditions imposed upon admission to Canada

To qualify, you must first meet the requirement of Business Experience and Net worth. You will then be assessed against five selection factors of Education, Business Experience, Age, Ability in English / French and Adaptability. The pass mark is currently 35 points.

Province of Quebec offers its own Investor program. Please check this link for detail information.

ENTREPRENEUR

The Entrepreneur Program seeks to attract experienced persons that will own and actively manage businesses in Canada that will contribute to the Canadian economy and create jobs for the Canadian permanent residents and citizens.

To qualify under this category, applicants are expected to have business experience and a legally obtained minimum net worth of $300,000. “Net worth”, in respect of an entrepreneur, means the fair market value of all of the assets of the entrepreneur and their spouse or common-law partner minus the fair market value of all of their liabilities.

Apart from that they have to commit to CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) of managing of a Canadian business of a defined size for at least one year within three years of landing in Canada and meet other requirements.

All applicants must indicate in writing that they intend and will be able to meet these conditions, which are also applicable to all family members.

SELF EMPLOYED

The Self-Employed Person Program allows applicants with relevant experience in culture, athletics or farm management to immigrate to Canada provided that they make a significant contribution to the cultural or athletic life of Canada or purchase and manage a farm in Canada.

Only immigrants who are self-employed in cultural activities or in athletics or have farm management experience are eligible for this class.
